West Coast Classics are proud to present a rare and exceptional example of this restored and always rust free original southern California 1967 Volkswagen 21 Window Deluxe Samba Microbus with skylight windows and cloth sunroof!
This is the highly desirable and collectible iconic Type 24 Bus (Deluxe 9 passenger Microbus) which were originally marketed for touring the Alps with small skylight windows embedded into the roof for added viewing capabilities and were manufactured with the highest trim level available which included trim strips along the beltline and a dash clock! Most Deluxe Microbuses were ordered as ‘Samba’ models (a $160 option) that included a sliding canvas 'Golde' sunroof flanked by the 4 skylight windows on each side of the roof (that’s a 23 window bus through model 1963 and a 21 window bus starting in model year 1964). The deluxe Microbus was Volkswagen’s top-of-the-line transporter.
This original southern California bus has remarkably never had any history of any rust or accidents and has all its original sheet metal and floor pans and roof rails which are in virtually perfect condition and according to the long-time previous owner the bus was always garaged indoors which seems obviously true. The body is razor straight and all the door and panel fits are original and as they should be.
It was professionally (and required only a very light restoration) restored and sold to the previous owner 8 years ago (and only some 700 miles ago!) by a renown Orange County VW restoration shop who are legendary in the Volkswagen community for their very high standards of restorations and they properly lowered the bus with dropped spindles and a swing rear lowering kit etc and fitted it with highly desirable 'original German' Safari front windows. The bus was finished in a very professional and a gorgeous two-tone color combination of blue and white paint which has only very minor imperfections noticeable only upon very close inspection and the bus has an absolutely beautiful white interior with blue piping and it has rubber floor mats and a carpeted rear deck!
The engine was completely rebuilt with an updated 1600 single carb engine and some of the recently replaced parts include new brakes, tires, shocks and a new wooden luggage rack! This bus must be driven to be fully appreciated - the engine is extremely strong and responsive with excellent oil pressure and no oil leaks and which sounds absolutely magnificent, the original factory 4 speed transmission shifts smoothly through all the gears, the van brakes great and the engine temperature always remains cool.
We at West Coast Classics inspected and watched as two virtually identical, if not inferior, examples of this particular model bus sold for over $110K at Barrett Jackson in Las Vegas in October 2010 and over $78K at Bonhams in Los Angeles in November 2010 and it is now patently obvious that these are the Volkswagens that collectors and enthusiasts around the world are seeking with increasing fervor and you will certainly look long and hard to find a finer original southern California restored and always rust free original example of this iconic 1967 VW 21 Window Samba Bus available anywhere else!
