For sale at Gateway Classic Cars in our St. Louis showroom is a 1968 Pontiac GTO. This GTO is powered by a 400 cubic inch V8 backed up by a Muncie M-21 close ratio 4-speed manual transmission and a set of 3.55 rear gears. This is a great combination for the true enthusiast. 3.55s will let you have fun around town and still be able to cruise at highway speeds. It's hard to go wrong with a big V8, 4-speed manual with bucket seats, covered headlights and a hood mounted tachometer. Most would say that the GTO was the first true muscle car. In 1964 Pontiac released a midsized car powered by an engine you could only find in larger cars and the rest is history. Ford, Mopar and the rest of the GM line up followed suit and the muscle car era had officially begun. 1968 was the first year of the second generation of the GTO that continued until 1973. Most considered this to be the end of the true GTO as the third generation was loosely based off of the Chevrolet Nova. The fourth and final generation came out in 2002 for a short run until the end of Pontiac in 2006. With Pontiac no longer in business, the GTO has become a very collectible car.
