For sale in our Chicago Showroom is a 1974 Mercedes Benz 350 SL. The SL Mercedes available in coupe and convertible was produced relatively unchanged from 1971 – 1989. Something had to be done well to keep positive sales for 18 years and by looking at this example you can see why there wasn’t much need to change. This vehicle was purchased new in Germany and was actually driven on the Autobahn before having the car shipping to the United States. The first 2 numbers of the model indicate the liter of engine that the car had this one being a 3.5 Liter V8 that produced an even 200 horsepower and 211 lb ft. of torque at 4000 RPMs. This whisper quiet V8 is backed by a 3 Speed automatic transmission. The double wishbone suspension and disc brakes make driving this 3500 LB car a complete pleasure. You will be surprised at the even weight distribution that makes cornering effortless. This fine example of German engineering has been pampered since new and has driven just 77,000 miles (Less than 2,000 miles per year). All maintenance has been kept current as the owner is an automotive technician. New in the last 3 years are tires, brakes, exhaust, coolant hoses, belts, coolant service, transmission service, fuel injectors, MAP sensor. For better performance and reliability a Pertronix ignition conversion was done. This car does have both the hard and soft top as well as a rear seat kit. Options on this car include AM/FM Radio with CD Player, convertible top, power steering, power brakes, seat belts, vinyl interior, radial tires and aluminum wheels. Standard even for 1974 was a passenger air bag that Mercedes helped to pioneer. One option you will notice that is void on a vintage Mercedes is a tilt steering wheel. When asked about why Mercedes had gone so long without having a tilt wheel one of the designers replied “We worked for years to get the wheel at the correct angle and we are not going to let anyone change it”. If you are looking for a nostalgic convertible that is reliable to drive and inexpensive to own this is the one for you. Not only does this car look amazing with its shiny white paint and bold red interior but it still dries and handles like a dream. This car is sure to deliver performance while turning heads everywhere you go.
