We are excited to offer on behalf of one of our clients this very rare 1962 Maserati 151 Le Mans reproduction coupe.
For many years, 2shores has been offering selected, rare collector vehicles. This 1962 Maserati Coupe is one of those examples!
The Maserati Tipo 151 is a racing car manufactured by Italian automobile manufacturer Maserati for the 1962 Le Mans season to compete in the experimental GT car class. Only three cars were built in total, one for Johnny Simone of Maserati France (151 002) with a red exterior color and white tri-stripes whilst two were built for Briggs Cunningham (151 004 and 151 006) for his racing team. These cars had a white body with two blue stripes. The Tipo 151 marked a return to more traditional concepts of car design and used a frame comprising a trellis of both round and oval large tubes, an independent front suspension and a De Dion axle which was modified to act like a swing-arm axle. The V8 engine was derived from the 450S with a reduced displacement of just under 4.0 litres due to a restriction imposed by the FIA that the participants in the experimental GT cars should have 4-litre engines.
The aluminium body was designed by Giulio Alfieri and refined using a wind tunnel at Milan University. It was reminiscent of the Frank Costin designed Zagato bodied 450S, but with an accentuated Kamm Tail. The mandatory doors opened halfway up the side due to the longitudinal tubes of the frame and the lateral fuel tanks. The chassis was designed by Giorgio Molinari while the suspension was designed by Gianpaolo Dallara who had recently joined Maserati.
Our car on offer is a 1962 Maserati 151 Le Mans reproduction coupe with serial number 151007 and a valid California title. This car was created from a 1961 Maserati 3500 GT Touring car, serial number 101*1402.
This is a project car which is owned by the current owner for many years. It was on display at the Amelia Island Concourse and RM Auctions about 20 years ago.
It is believed that this recreation was made by Piero Drago, a coach builder in Modena, Italy who also built the first AC Cobra aluminum bodies and the ISO A3/C.
This is an aluminum body over the 3500 GT Touring chassis with a modified Jaguar center section and a CWI IRS unit tacked into place for the rear. That part was never finished as the original 15 inch Borrani cast aluminum wheels won't clear the lower bearing support. Originally, this car had a Jag rear end with a De Dion tube, which is included with the sale. The engine is a 4.7 liter DOHC with four 2-barrel Weber’s, and the engine's serial number indicates a Maserati Mexico. The five speed transmission appears to be fully functional.
Almost all parts are included to put this stunning car back together! Wire wheels, pedal assembly and exhaust system with headers are included.
A new driveshaft would need to be fabricated and a new windshield sourced.
Clear California title in owner’s name describing a 1962 Maserati with serial number 151007. California license plates with current stickers and registration are also included. Engine number is AM112 star and 258 star. Water pump is not on the engine but it has been rebuilt and is ready for installation.
The car is currently in a disassembled state but moves freely.
Please study all the photos closely to evaluate the condition of this car!
