1971 MGB - This is an exceptionally nice, solid MGB that looks far better than average and one you would be proud to drive anywhere. The car has a new dark British Racing Green paint job and a high quality tan top with zip-out rear window.
The car was acquired out of a local barn where it had resided for probably less than a year and suffered from typical lower body corrosion. Floors and inner sills were solid and it had excellent, original shut lines and showed no signs of bondo or accident damage. The car was stripped of all lights, glass and trim, both rocker panels repaired (one completely replaced, one only required patching), dog legs were replaced along with some lower front fender repair. The car received a quality, but not concours paint job in the original dark British Racing Green. All work was carried out by a respected restoration shop in Maryland with extensive experience with MGB’s.
New and/or replaced items include:
New paint
Rocker panel, dog legs, lower right front fender replaced
New tan top with zip-out rear window
New front and rear bumpers and over-riders
New grille assembly
New tail light lenses & reverse light lenses
New door weather stripping
Rebuilt front brake calipers
New brake flex hoses, front and rear
New radiator hoses
New tires
New wheel trim rings, center caps and lug nuts
Rebuilt alternator
New aftermarket interior console
Numerous other new odds and ends
Service records for the car go back to 1989 and show, in addition to normal maintenance, the car has had the following replaced:
Clutch plate, disc, throw-out bearing
Clutch slave cylinder
Brake master cylinder
Included is the original jack, lug wrench, tonneau (old but serviceable), excellent spare and original owners manual. The tires are brand new 185/70x14 radials but I must mention they have been in the upstairs of my barn for about 3 years.
Everything electrical works with the possible exception of the lighter, even the interior and inside trunk lights work. The electrical wiring appears completely stock and shows no signs of “shadetree electrical engineering,” so common to these cars. Engine feels strong, oil pressure is a solid 70lb. cold, 60lb. hot, compression is: #1-160lb., #2-158lb, #3-160lb., #4-159lb. The car starts instantly, the transmission has good syncros and shifts smoothly up and down, the brakes are firm and the handbrake works.
Recent service has included: fresh oil, oil filter, brake fluid, coolant, suspension lubrication, valve adjustment, plugs cleaned and set, distributor and points cleaned and set, rear brakes adjusted, carburetors cleaned and adjusted. Brake calipers and flex hoses were replaced and inspection showed ample material remaining on the pads and shoes.
The car apparently received brand new high-quality tan carpets just prior to being put in the barn and are excellent. Interior is autumn leaf and shows no splits, tears or worn areas and appears as new, dashboard is not cracked or split, all the gauges function. The car has an original vintage AM radio, so you will probably want to replace the radio but the current one functions and certainly adds to the period feel.
Here is a car I would feel completely comfortable getting in and driving and enjoying and you would not be embarrassed to take it to any British car gathering. This is not a concours restored car, but a solid, no excuse MGB. It has a clear Virginia title, is currently registered a has a recent VA state inspection.
I’ve owned many MGB’s; they are not Toyotas, so don’t expect to buy it and forget it, but if properly maintained, MGB’s can be reliable, economical to run cars that will keep up with modern traffic, are stylish, enjoyable to drive and will only appreciate in value.
Life is short, why drive boring cars?
