Gateway Classic Cars of St. Louis is proud to offer a very special 1971 Ford Mustang Mach 1. This Mach is optioned with the rare 429 Super Cobra Jet and with the Drag-Pack option. According to the Marti report, just over 500 cars were optioned this way. The Drag-Pack got a 3.91 Traction-Lok rear end and upgraded the 429 to the SUPER Cobra Jet. The engine got a different cam, and solid lifters as well as a larger 780 CFM Holley carburetor. Even with the Wide Oval bias ply tires, this car was meant for putting power to the ground. This particular 429 SCJ was rated at 375 HP, but many believe the actual output to be closer to the 400 mark. It is a special car, and this one has a special history. The car was special ordered for a GI away in the military by his father, exactly as instructed. Father had the car waiting for his son when he returned home from overseas. The majority of the miles on this car were racked up between 1971 and 1975. For whatever reason the car went into storage at that time, not to be recovered until 2006. At that time the car changed hands into a collection of a Mustang enthusiast with only 21,000 miles on the odometer. The car was given a thorough cleaning including the undercarriage and engine bay. The factory undercoating was scraped from the underside and replaced with paint. The engine was removed and had new gaskets installed, but not rebuilt. The engine and transmission at this time have 22,619 original miles. The car is believed to wear its original coat of dark metallic green, with silver accents. It sits on the correct hub cap wheels and a newer set of original style Wide Oval tires. The interior is black vinyl in wonderful condition. Climbing behind the wheel of this car really is like stepping back into 1971. It is a multiple show winner for obvious reasons. You may notice a nick in the paint on the passenger side mirror and door. These blemishes happened shortly after the car was purchased new. The car will come with an estimate from the body shop at the dealership at which the car was purchased new. The estimate to repair the paint was $24.78 and is dated 8-18-71. At this point the blemishes are as much a part of the car as the rest of it, and it would be a shame to repair. It you're looking for a very unique, very original, very powerful Mach 1 Mustang worthy of a true collector, this is your car.
