HISTORY OF THE FERRARI 512BBI
The Ferrari 512BB, abbreviated for Berlinetta Boxer, was introduced in 1973 and was the first model to incorporate the mid mounted flat-12 cylinder engine. Designed by Leonardo Fioravanti, the 512 nomenclature was derived from the vehicle’s 5 liter 12 cylinder engine. 1981 marked the first time the 512BB was produced with a Bosch K-Jetronic fuel-injection system over the more traditional Weber carbureted models. The aptly renamed 512BBi Ferrari was seen by many as a more drivable and reliable model compared to its predecessors. Minor yet noticeable styling changes occurred as well. Driving lights were integrated into a shortened egg-crate grill, while the rear of the vehicle saw the addition of rectangular parking lights matched with a redesigned exhaust shroud. With its 340 horsepower flat 12-cylinder fuel-injected engine, the 512BBi has quickly become one of the most sought-after Ferraris of the 1980’s.
