1961 Datsun SPL212 Fairlady 

*MAKE OFFER*1961 Datsun SPL212 Fairlady Roadster (named after the Movie MY FAIR LADY. This car is very, very rare. There were less than 250 made world wide, and only several exist today, mainly in Museums. This was the first sports car that Datsun/Nissan sold in the United Sates. The vin number for this car is SPL212000060A meaning that it was car #60. This is possibly the only one in Utah. I have no idea what this car is worth and I’m open to offers.

The condition of the car is as follows:



Engine: This is not the original engine. The original engine is an “E” engine but the “E1” and “J13” engines will mount up with the same mounts and transmission. This car has the most powerful of the 3 the “J13”. The engine will need to be completely rebuilt, but parts can be found on line. The “E1” engine can be found in the L320 pickup as well as some other cars (not sure which ones). The “J13” can be found in 520 and 521 trucks and several other cars. You can even use some engine parts from MG’s and Austin’s (from Britain).

1. Transmission: appears to shift in to all gears but I do not know its condition for sure.

2. Hydraulics:

a. Clutch: Will need to be completely rebuilt, however parts form other more numerous Datsun trucks and cars will have parts that will work. Also if needed, the original parts can be relined and brought back to workable condition.

b. Brakes: They will also need to be rebuilt. As with the clutch, parts can be used from other Datsuns, or can be rebuilt.

3. Body: as you can see there is major rust along the rocker panels and rear fenders. You can also see that the rear seat sections are rusted away, and there are some rusted areas on the floor pan just before the firewall. The front of this car was involved in a light front collision and will need to be fixed this happened before I got the car back in 1986. Although I’m not a professional body man I think that all the body damage could be repaired with a reasonable amount of work.

4. Interior: It will need to be completely redone, however I have a good number of the parts needed to restore it.

5. Convertible top: The top is not in great shape but should make a good pattern for a new one. The side window/curtains will need to be rebuilt as well.

I have tried to give the best explanation as to the cars condition however this car is being sold “AS IS”. Please feel free to call me and set up a time to come see it. Keep in mind that it’s not a bad idea to have tangible assets in your investment portfolio. This would be a great restoration project because there are lots of parts that can be used from other Datsun trucks and cars from this era, and even parts form other British Cars like MG and Austin.
