For sale in our Chicago showroom is this sinister 1987 Buick Grand National. Since 1984 the Grand National has been the ultimate sleeper. Most people would see the “Buick” logo and assume it was a standard V6 regal. Few people were aware the Grand National was a special edition fitted with a turbocharger capable of propelling the car to a ¼ mile time of 15.9 which, while slow by the standards of today, was fairly quick considering the 1984 Corvette was around 15.1 seconds. For the owner of this particular Grand National, however, it wasn’t fast enough. With only slight exterior modifications, including tinted windows and a set of Mickey Thompson drag radials wrapped around a set of custom lightweight alloy rims, you wouldn’t think anything too special of this Buick, until it blasts past you. This car truly is the ultimate sleeper. With a best recorded ¼ mile time of 10.59 at 127mph it’s quite a bit faster than stock. All of that speed comes from quite a few upgrades over the standard 3.8L turbo engine. Most notable is the larger 70mm Turbonetics turbo, ported and polished cylinder heads, an aluminum radiator, and a methanol injection system. All of that power is put through an upgraded transmission with a trans-brake to help with quick launches off the starting line. Now, while all of that makes this sound like a strictly race car, one can easily drive this daily. The interior is left mostly stock, with the only additions being extra gauges used to monitor the engine more closely, and a roll cage with removable door bars. Factory radio systems in the ‘80s weren’t particularly high fidelity, so the radio was upgraded to a modern Alpine stereo. Three amplifiers were also added to power the six speaker system, as well as the 12” subwoofer in a custom mounted enclosure in the trunk. This car really is the definition of “street/strip” as it can serve double duty with no issues. Options include: air-conditioning, CD player, cruise control, power brakes, power steering, power locks, power windows, tilt wheel, seat belts, cloth interior, racing tires, alloy wheels.
