For sale at Gateway Classic Cars in our St. Louis showroom is a 1969 AMC AMX. This AMX has recently been painted in Matador Red paint with white Go-Pac stripes. This AMX is optioned with power steering, power brakes, AM/FM radio, remote driver's side mirror and a 390 cubic inch V8 with a 4 speed manual transmission and 3.54 posi-traction. Recently the car has received new BFGoodrich Radial T/A tires mounted on new Magnum 500 wheels, new battery, rear shocks, weather stripping and emergency brake cable. The engine was rebuilt about ten years and 3,500 miles ago and was upgraded with an Edelbrock aluminum intake manifold, Edelbrock carburetor and an electronic ignition. At that same time the front end and brakes were all rebuilt. Originally the car was also equipped with A/C. A 390 and a four speed, yes please. What a car! Some thought of the 2 seater AMX as a direct competitor to the Corvette. It sure was less expensive and today, much more rare. Produced from 1968 to 1970, this was the only American made steel bodied 2 seater car available. Sales were not as strong as AMC had hoped for which led to their focus on the continuing with the longer four seater Javelin. Although the Javelin looked very similar, the car was actually 12 inches longer and had different quarter panels, quarter glass, roof, grille, hood and taillights. Production for the AMX in 1969 was 8,293. There's only so many of these still on the road today and they are getting more attention from collectors.
